Department of Bengali, Kirori Mal College was established in the year 1963. But it came into existence in July 1969, When Ms. Shipra Choudhuri joined as a Bengali Faculty. In comparison, number of students studying Bengali in Delhi was minimal. It was a tiny department with only a B. A. (Pass) Bengali course. Principal after principal has helped to grow the Department.  After  Dr. Shipra Choudhuri’s retirement the department was run by an  Ad-hoc faculty.  Year by year past. Our Department comes to real look now. So Bengali Society will also be formed soon, named after “Akshor”.  The Department conducts seminars and many other events.

The Bengali Department aims to make students aware of the Bengali language and Literature, its ethnic linguistic history, stylistics in literary writings and contemporary form through teaching, research in different genres of writings, and extension activities along with the linguistic diversity of India. So, students can interact and collaborate with other departments for research and projects. It helps them to get more insights into multi-disciplinary perspectives beyond the syllabus. Our department does not offer Honors in Bengali to date, Despite our limited capacity the department has a practice of open interaction with the students and mentoring them for their holistic growth. And our sincere effort always will try to flourish the students in every way.
